The 1600 square foot space can comfortably accommodate up to 60 people, and is conveniently located on Raleigh’s historic Hillsborough Street within walking distance of N.C. State. The restored home features a wide front porch, original fireplaces, chandeliers and crystal doorknobs, and beautiful original windows and glass throughout. Updates include central air and heart, a warming kitchen, ADA accessible restroom, and a 10 kilowatt solar array that provides nearly 100% of the Brown House’s electrical needs. Built by ‘Fab’ Brown in 1917, the home was owned by the family until 1975, when it was purchased by the Adams Terry Realty Company. Adams Terry provided stewardship of the house until 2021, agreeing to a sale once the preservation and rejuvenation of the house was assured. Today, the house serves as a meeting annex for New City Design Group, one of Raleigh’s most venerable architecture practices. The H. J. Brown Coffin House remained a family business for generations. At the turn of the century, it was managed by Fabius “Fab” Brown, Henry’s grandson. Henry Brown was born in Virginia in the early 1800s. By the 1840s, he and his father had relocated to Raleigh and started a business manufacturing furniture. Eventually, they began to make coffins as well, and established the H. J. Brown Coffin House, still visible today at 200 S Salisbury Street. The business model shifted, and the Coffin House became a funeral home. The Brown-Wynne Funeral Home is still operational in Raleigh today.
